Mars Lander Runner Major Update:

A promise made…
At long last the Lander Runner is (hopefully) going to receive its final iteration. And contrary to what I said last week, I’ve made a few significant changes:

Aesthetic Update:

Mars Lander Runner no longer has those unsightly black bars along the sides of the screen that made it look like a really weird aspect ratio. The sides of the screen have been properly filled with some real content, adding back the play/stop, load, and quit buttons from the Mars Lander Builder. Also, the buttons from dialog boxes appear nicely on the other side of the screen. Overall, I think it just looks better, and no longer requires you to go back to the main-menu to load another level.

HTML5 Runner:

As I said in last week’s update, Mars Lander Online Runner Edition is now officially releasing simultaneously with the standard Lander Runner. I’ve worked hard to overcome all the difficulties that GameMaker HTML5 threw at me, and the result is an experience strikingly similar to what you’ll experience offline, with one intentional and significant difference: Level are loaded directly from their codes. This means that you can just grab the level codes right off of this (and previous) news post, and paste them right into the game and play! No need to download the level pack OR the runner!

Gameplay Update:

The latest version of Mars Lander Runner brings a whole new Game Mode to the table: Crystal Collection mode.
Originally, in order to beat a level, you had to get to the Landing Pad. You could collect Crystals along the way, but it wasn’t necessary to win, and just served to boost your score. With this new mode, the program automatically detects whether or not a Landing Pad exists in the level, and changes the victory conditions accordingly.
This may seem like a subtle change, but it really alters the feel of the game, since you can now pick in which order you collect the crystals, and this will radically increase or decrease the level of difficulty, since the level ends immediately when you collect the last crystal. Also, unlike the Landing Pad, you can hit the crystals as fast as you want.
To celebrate the introduction of this new game mode, I’ve created all the levels this week using the Crystal Collector option. Look ye mighty and disappear in search of a Landing Pad, the only way to win is to get ALL the Crystals!
